“The fiction I’m most interested in has lines of reference to the real world.” ~Raymond Carver

This may seem like an obvious observation, but everything we think is culturally and historically connected. Our brains work by a process of collage, montage. Our ideas come from the world around us, and in essence nothing is authentic. We borrow and steal – it is then what we do to put our own take on it that makes that idea “ours”. That is why we can find ideas and become inspired in the most unlikely ways. We just have to look. Our subconscious will do the hard work of making unlikely mental connections.
